Tim Marlow

112 p. (capa dura)

ISBN 978-1854221001

Art historian Tim Marlow examines Schiele's life and art in detail and sets them in the context of the fin-de-siecle Viennese cultural scene. In a lengthy introduction he describes Schiele's life and the effect on his art of the death of his father, estrangement from his mother, and the probable sexual nature of his relationship with his younger sister Gerti. This introduction is lavishly illustrated with photographs of the artist, his family and friends, influential works by contemporaries such as Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl, and examples of Schiele's expressive graphic work. There follow 90 of Schiele's finest paintings reproduced in large scale full-colour. These cover every aspect of his painted works including self-portraits, landscapes, portraits of his friends and of his models. He spent several weeks in prison on an indecency charge because of his provocative eroticism of some of his portraits. But this experience resulted in some of his most movingly anguished and innovative works, the prison watercolours. Each of these works is discussed in detail making 'Egon Schiele' a beautiful and informative monograph on this unique and disturbing artist.
